Version of the Volkswagen Passat driven by natural gas (methane) was named the most environmentally friendly European car. This was established by the Eco Test of FIA-(Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) where the Passat gets 92 points from the maximum 100.
A similar result was achieved only by the hybrid model of the Toyota – Prius.
Unlike expensive hybrid technology however Passat is powered by a TSI turbo engine with volume 1.4 liters which also works with gasoline and natural gas.
The FIA Eco Test takes into account not only emissions of CO2 but also bad to human pollutants such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides.
A key to the success of the Passat was the ability to replace gasoline with natural gas.
