According to board member Ulrich Hackenberg, the upcoming Polo R WRC boosts a street-legal version’s chances but the model may take some time to make it to market. “You can see how the WRC programme would increase the probability of an R version of the base model. It is with the rally programme, not before it. I can’t give a precise date, but it’s along those lines.” That means a market introduction for the Polo R won’t happen before 2013.

Volkswagen is back to the WRC: In 2013 Volkswagen will start contesting the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) with the Polo R WRC. After three consecutive victories at the Dakar Rally, Volkswagen has set itself new aims. By 2013 Volkswagen will develop a near-300-hp rally vehicle with a 1.6-litre TSI engine and four-wheel drive based on the Polo.

Rumors of the return of Volkswagen date long ago, but after three years in a row the Germans won the legendary Dakar Rally, they apparently lost interest in the WRC. Now, however, the emergence of the team from Wolfsburg is secure. From VW Motorsport announced that it will not start in the Dakar Rally in 2012, but will provide their Race Touareg 3 to private teams that want to drive it. However, the team’s priorities change.

The brand will participate in the rally championship with one of the most sympathetic of its models – Polo. Race car will be named Polo R WRC. Germans still keep the secret about many parameters and the car was a model with tinted windows. However there still are 20 months to the emerge of the Polo on rally tracks.

Volkswagen’s biggest move is clear. German brand will be in close cooperation with Skoda Motorsport as Czechs definitely have great experience in rally championships and won all in IRC – alternative to the WRC Championship, which allow brands to engage with smaller budgets and become more attractive than the original option.

The petrol engines will start with 1.2 liters with 70 hp, 1.4 power is 85 hp and 1.2 TSI 105 bhp power, which is combined with a manual transmission with 6 speeds. It will be offered extra edition with the seven-speed DSG as well.

CrossPolo diesel engine is actually only one volume of 1.6 liters, but three versions of power – 75, 90 and 105 hp. Each of them has a filter to trap solid particles, which lowers harmful CO2 emissions to just 113 grams per kilometer.

Volkswagen CrossPolo have differences outside of the standard Polo. CrossPolo has a new front apron with integrated fog lamps and larger air intakes. At the bottom of the body has a number of protective plastic sheets. The car has alloy wheels with diameters of 17-inch five-spokes and silver roof rails.

You can choose between 6 colors for the body, such as orange (Magma Orange) and beige (Terra Beige Metallic) which are created specifically for this model. The interior of CrossPolo is in two colors, there are sports seats and leather steering wheel and leather handbrake lever.

In standard equipment CrossPolo includes automatic and heated exterior mirrors, electric windows, a large multifunction display and adjustable in height sports seats.

The price of the compact sedan in Trendline equipment starts at 399,000 rubles (about 20,500 euro). Version Comfortline (with rich equipment, including ABS, heated seats, 15 inch wheels, etc., at a price of 468,000 rubles (about 24,000 euro).

In most richly furnished Highline version has air conditioning, central locking, audio system with MP3 player, fog lamps and more which is worth 534,000 rubles (about 27,400). Compared to the hatchback Polo, whose platform is made on, Polo Sedan has extended wheelbase, more tracks and increased by 15 mm ground clearance (up to 170 mm). Thus, the Polo sedan has a length of 4384 mm, width 1700 mm, height 1463 mm and distance between axles 2552 mm. Trunk volume is 460 liters.

The car was created in accordance with the Russian climate and road conditions which were analyzed by VW for several years. Volkswagen Polo Sedan will be available with petrol engine volume 1.6 liters and 105 hp power.

It will be combined with manual gearbox with five gears or automatic transmission with six gears Tiptronic. With the manual transmission the car accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h 10.5 seconds, with a tiptronic for 12.1 seconds.

Production of this model will be in the VW factory in the Russian city of Kaluga.

According to data published in the German edition of Auto Motor und Sport, Polo R will be with a petrol turbo engine with 1.6 liters volume with the system of direct fuel injection.

The car will have a capacity of about 210 hp. This engine is a development of Volkswagen and will also appear in the new generation VW Golf in 2012.

Unlike the Golf R, Polo R version will not have 4×4 and will only be with simulated frontal locking realized with the help of ABS.

Diesel engines will have a maximum power of 75, 90 and 105 hp. It is expected that the price of the CrossPolo in Europe to be around 3 000 euro more expensive than the comparable car with standard engine and equipment.

The basic price of the Cross Polo will start at around 15 400 euro in Germany.

Maximum torque is 250 Nm and it is available from 2000 to 4500 rpm. The engine will be combined with a gearbox with 7 gears and two clutches.

According to VW, Polo GTI acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h is 6.9 seconds. The maximum speed of the “hot” Polo is 230 km/hour. VW Polo GTI has an imitation of the electronic locking differential XDS and a new suspension which makes the car approaching 15 mm up the road. Wheels are 17 inches in size.

In the interior we see a new steering wheel with “cut” bottom and sport seats. Sales in Europe should begin in August.
