The Volkswagen Beetle
This classic car has been rendered more modern in more recent times, but the Beetle, otherwise known as the Volkswagen Type 1, is one of the most well known and loved cars of all time. The Volkswagen Beetle was produced from the year 1938 until 2003, making it not only one of the most widely manufactured vehicles of all time, but the longest running. The Beetle, or the Kafer as it was known in Germany, was the original continental economy car. It would not be until 1945, when 1,785 Volkswagen Type 1 Beetles would be produced, however – prior to then they were known as the Kraft durch Freude, or KdF Wagon. This small powerhouse of a vehicle was made to be much more powerful than other small cars, making it perfect for trips on the Autobahn. Its biggest rise to fame would come in 1971, when, now produced in the US, it would become known as the Super Beetle.
